< Sport For Future Smile in London (Draft)>
1: Backgrounds
At a global level sport has been increasingly used as a tool for social change, and various stakeholders, including public, private and citizen sectors, have been actively involved in the process. On the other hand, this transformation has not yet been fully realized in Japan, and, as a result, Japanese people still regard sport only as something that gives dreams and hope. These things are true, but, most importantly, sport can change the world, and we need to take further steps to utilize the power of sport to solve social issues as well as to raise awareness of them. Sport For Smile will provide vital information regarding this field both in Japanese and English, so more Japanese people can be aware of the global developments, and it aims to create the first-ever Japanese community of sport-as-a-catalyst for-social-change.
2: Purpose
In order to provide the youth in Japan with the opportunity to open up their minds globally and to experience the power of sport to change the world, Sport For Smile has launched a new project line: “Sport For Future Smile.” Sport For Future Smile (SFFS) will send youth leaders from Japan to global cities every year to learn about the best practice of the power of sport to change the lives of marginalized people. London was selected as the destination of the inaugural SFFS programme, in order to make the most of the opportunity provided by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In addition, London has led the global community of sport-as-a-social-change by introducing many best practices that have made a significant social impact.
3: Features of the Project
The “SFFS” programme aims to nurture future leaders who can make a social impact using the power of sport, and who can make their presence felt in the related global communities. In order to achieve this purpose, the SFFS programme provides participants with training sessions with global influential people, including United Nations and high-level representatives from UK communities. Also included will be tours around the Paralympic Games preparation areas, and site visits to local projects which have been making a difference in their respective communities.
The participants are expected to be in their 20’s and under and have a basic understanding of the global movement of sport-as-a-social-change. They should have solid academic records, high ideals, and a well-developed sense of the importance of “giving back” to society. English capability at a daily conversation level is required. The participants are also expected to have exceptional maturity and demonstrated leadership qualities, either from sports, school, or community activities. The purpose of this program is to give enhanced depth and scope to their existing leadership skills.
