Looking For Joint Sponsors For Community Center

Location: 福島県会津美里町 / Aizu Misato Machi in Fukushima Prefecture

Expiry: 2011-12-31
Created: 2011-11-04

The residents of Naraha Machi, a town located within the 20km evacuation zone of the Fukushima Nuclear Power Plan, evacuated on March 12th with many of its residents relocating to temporary housing that has been constructed in its host town of Aizu Misato Machi in Fukushima Prefecture. With the snow season, the town officials of Naraha Machi would like to construct a community center next to the temporary housing area for the children of Naraha Machi to give them someplace to go during the cold winter months. A log cabin manufacturer has agreed to build a 75m2 log cabin at cost for 8 million yen. One sponsor has been identified and we are looking for additional sponsors for this project.

If you are interesting in helping sponsor this project, please contact peter.jedrey@kvh.co.jp

Funding for Temporary Shopping Centre

Location: Onagawa, by Ishinomaki

Expiry: 2012-05-01
Created: 2012-01-23

Proposal for Constructing Temporary Shopping Centre at Onagawa High School ground, proposed by Onagawa Chamber of Commerce

- Who will benefit from this grant?
30 local shop owners (please contact me for a full list), Onagawa citizens

How many people will benefit from this grant?
8,327 (The number of Onagawa population survived and certified by Onagawa Town as of 1 April)

- What are the long term benefits of this project?
86% of Onagawa Town is covered by mountains and forests where nothing can be built which is a big cause to hinder the recovery of the local economy boost. The remaining 14% of the land is heavily damaged by Tsunami and the central district is swept away and has lost its function completely. Onagawa High School is located in a small part of Onagawa where Tsunami did not reach. Therefore, Onagawa Chamber of Commerce and The Organization for Small & Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, JAPAN (SME Support, JAPAN) have agreed with Onagawa High School to use their ground area to build Temporary Government Building (opened on 5 December, 2011) and Temporary Shopping Center (scheduled to be open in 2012 spring). This will not only be a commercial central district of Onagawa for the upcoming couple of years but also provide a real and first opportunity for Onagawa to boost its town and economy and is therefore seen as a very important plan to support Onagawa's recovery.

- Potential for measurable results?
Currently, there only are 5 shops open in Onagawa. This will be increased to 50 with the opening of the temporary shopping center. Also, this will influence the number of whole Onagawa population.

- Additional information:
30 shops listed above are scheduled to be constructed under the Onagawa Chamber of Commerce coordination. Another 20 shops are scheduled to be constructed under the The Organization for Small & Medium Enterprises and Regional Innovation, JAPAN (SME Support, JAPAN) – Onagawa Town. The budget below is to support the areas and construction plan that Onagawa Chamber of Commerce is responsible for.

Harvesting machine needed for Green Farmers Association (JPY400,000)

Location: 南三陸町

We thank the BCCJ for providing funds for a multi-cultivator, in December 2011.

We are now in need of one further piece of equipment to make work a little easier for our GFA local staff. It is called a harvester and is used to help spread fertilizer evenly around the field. One learning point from last season was to make sure the fertilizer is spread as evenly as possible to ensure all the vegetables in the plot grow to full maturity. Human error means this is difficult, hence the need for the new machine.

If you can help, please get in touch!

THE SITUATION:
In Minamisanirku today, there is little focus put on young residents between the ages of 20-35. Many care programs and NPO projects have started with initiatives aimed at support for young children and the elderly. Although there was an initial population departure immediately following the disaster, those who were married, had a job or family to look after did stay and have made a commitment to the town. However, if the situation doesn’t drastically improve, what we will be looking at is a slow decline in population of rural coastal towns along Tohoku. Many of these towns could still be on the verge of extinction. Without their young, how will the town survive, rebuild and grow again?

THE NEED:
For progress to be achieved, not only do local residents need jobs and educational opportunities, they must also enjoy their environment. Lets face it, fun is important in life!

Local residents need a place to meet and interect with others their own age and with similar interests, a place to relax, have a drink, talk about their worries, meet new friends, dance, unwind and enjoy life! Would you live in a town that had no opportunities to meet girls/guys? Would you want to stay in a town where your schedule rotated from work to home and work to home (temporary housing homes to boot!)
When someone living in Minamisanriku wants to have a drink, dance or meet other young people, they must drive to Sanuma, Kessenuma, Ishinomaki or Sendai.

THE POSSIBILITIES:
Instead of people leaving for the surrounding towns and cities, what if we could create a place that could draw them to Minamisanriku? A project/business which could offer employment, add to the economic rebuilding of Minamisanriku and also offer entertainment to local residents and tourists.

for more information on the project and budget outline please email ogaforaid@gmail.com. Thank you!!

Celebrate 2gether

Location: 宮城県南三陸町

Expiry: 2012-12-31
Created: 2012-02-20 / Updated: 2012-03-08

THE NEED:
Due to the immense loss of life and the extreme devastation of the communities of Minamisanriku the residents who now live in various Temporary Homes need opportunities to forget their struggle and find moral support, amusement and comfort in friends.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:
Positive community socialization is key to rebuilding of shattered neighborhoods, broken homes and devastated communities. The Sea Side Center is focused on providing learning opportunities, facilitation of capacity building programs and also providing a space where people’s minds and hearts can heal, laugh again and enjoy time spent with family, friends, and also make new acquaintances. This environment that is fun, warm and engaging, and is both international and multicultural is a wonderful setting for the project “Celebrate 2gether”.
The committee of “Celebrate 2gether” is made up of both local residents and O.G.A. FOR AID staff and volunteers.
Together they plan, organize and implement birthday parties, holiday parties, international and/or multicultural themed events for children and families of the Minamisanriku area. Residents attend free of charge on the last Sunday of every month.
Coordinating mid-month holiday events, social circles and performances are part of the C2gether agenda as well.
As a donor or member of OGA FOR AID you may also present ideas, and activities to be implemented at various events.

BUDGET:
40,000jpy-
• Materials cover cost of preparing for event i.e. decorations, performance/ show, presents, games, activities. As well as items such as napkins, forks, paper plates etc.

15,000-
• Transportation covers costs of facilitating guests and staff to and from event venue(s)

45,000-
• Refreshments cover costs of food and beverages i.e. birthday cake, New Year o-mochi, valentines chocolates. Juices, teas, snack and finger foods etc.

10,000jpy-Miscellaneous
• On average about 80-100local residents are in attendance.

Total: 110,000jpy

CONCLUSION:
This project promotes families coming together and enjoying a multicultural experience. It gets the grandmothers, fathers, uncle and aunts involved, the older members of society investing time by planning and organizing for the younger. It promotes ownership of programs, leadership of events and a general growth towards renewed confidence and connectivity between local residents.
In short, for the long term rehabilitation of Minamisanriku we need individuals whose hearts and minds are positive, strengthened and supported by their families. In “unity there is strength”, the parties and events we hope to hold will foster among others that crucial aspect.

Shuttle Bus

Location: 宮城県南三陸町歌津、志津川

Expiry: 2012-09-30
Created: 2012-02-20 / Updated: 2012-03-08

THE NEED:
Due to former communities now being splintered up in various locations throughout the towns and the lack of personal vehicles residents find socializing with former neighbors and families difficult.
The current city buses have small routes and do not traverse both Shizugawa and Utatsu.

O.G.A. FOR AID has initiated a project called the CLC* and its first establishment in Shizugawa called the Sea Side Center. To facilitate students and guest to and from we conclude that a shuttle bus for this Sea Side Center is necessary.
Towards these ends:
• To facilitate as many local residents as possible to attend classes and events.
• To facilitate interaction among old and new communities.
• To help bridge the divide that is expanding between the two towns.
• Easy access to the Sea Side Center will facilitate local residents’ desire to be able to attend and will pave the way for introducing various workshops and learning opportunities.

PROJECT OVERVIEW:
We spoke to Hotel Kanyo, a 5 star hotel in the region and have negotiated an understanding of collaboration. They would allocate a bus to be used for the purpose of transporting individuals to and from the Sea Side Center, it will also stop at 8 other locations besides the Sea Side Center.

Rather than purchasing our own vehicle or requesting such a grant; by renting locally we can support the local economy while also meeting a need. The other aspects which the Hotel will cover are as follows:

• Driver (local resident, has knowledge of roads, also is licensed for public transportation)
• Insurance
• Fuel
• Maintenance (oil changes, snow tire change etc.)

Estimate time of one circuit is 1hour and 40min. The Shuttle bus will have 4 circuits per day.
It will stop in 8 other locations, some are repaired neighborhoods and others are Temporary Housing areas:
1) Maszawa Danchi
2) Heisei no Mori
3) Omori
4) Hosoura
5) Togura
6) shizen no iie
7) Mitobe
8) Numata

BUDGET:
Shuttle bus will be paid by O.G.A. FOR AID to Hotel Kanyo
Project management will be responsible to advertise, visit, discuss and communicate the schedule and logistics of project to and with local residents.
Fuel and maintenance will be included with overall price of Shuttle bus.
Promotion and printing will cover cost of printing flyers, bus schedules, and other advertising initiatives for the shuttle bus.

For further details and the excel spreadsheet outlining finances please email ogaforaid@gmail.com

CONCLUSION:
This project fills a ‘need with a resource’ as the residents themselves will benefit from building closer ties with each other; the center itself is facilitating learning, socializing and capacity building to local residents of all ages.

The local economy is also supported through this project. 1) Hotel Kanyo, which employs the majority of individuals of Shizugawa is being asked to supply the shuttle bus. 2) Free transportation to various locations of Minamisanriku will promote the visiting tourists to visit these other areas and spend cash in local places they may not have access to otherwise.

< Sport For Future Smile in London (Draft)>

1: Backgrounds

At a global level sport has been increasingly used as a tool for social change, and various stakeholders, including public, private and citizen sectors, have been actively involved in the process. On the other hand, this transformation has not yet been fully realized in Japan, and, as a result, Japanese people still regard sport only as something that gives dreams and hope. These things are true, but, most importantly, sport can change the world, and we need to take further steps to utilize the power of sport to solve social issues as well as to raise awareness of them. Sport For Smile will provide vital information regarding this field both in Japanese and English, so more Japanese people can be aware of the global developments, and it aims to create the first-ever Japanese community of sport-as-a-catalyst for-social-change.

2: Purpose

In order to provide the youth in Japan with the opportunity to open up their minds globally and to experience the power of sport to change the world, Sport For Smile has launched a new project line: “Sport For Future Smile.” Sport For Future Smile (SFFS) will send youth leaders from Japan to global cities every year to learn about the best practice of the power of sport to change the lives of marginalized people. London was selected as the destination of the inaugural SFFS programme, in order to make the most of the opportunity provided by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games. In addition, London has led the global community of sport-as-a-social-change by introducing many best practices that have made a significant social impact.

3: Features of the Project

The “SFFS” programme aims to nurture future leaders who can make a social impact using the power of sport, and who can make their presence felt in the related global communities. In order to achieve this purpose, the SFFS programme provides participants with training sessions with global influential people, including United Nations and high-level representatives from UK communities. Also included will be tours around the Paralympic Games preparation areas, and site visits to local projects which have been making a difference in their respective communities.

The participants are expected to be in their 20’s and under and have a basic understanding of the global movement of sport-as-a-social-change. They should have solid academic records, high ideals, and a well-developed sense of the importance of “giving back” to society. English capability at a daily conversation level is required. The participants are also expected to have exceptional maturity and demonstrated leadership qualities, either from sports, school, or community activities. The purpose of this program is to give enhanced depth and scope to their existing leadership skills.

Raising funds to send an orphan to college

Location: Sendai, Miyagi-ken

Expiry: 2012-08-05
Created: 2011-08-17

Hi my name is Paul Yoo, Co-founder of volunteerAKITA and The Fruit Tree Project (www.volunteerakita.org). Along with our on-going activities, we are also involved in the “Smiles & Dreams:Tohoku Kids Project” led by Living Dreams/SmileKidsJapan (www.livingdreams.jp and www.smilekidsjapan.org). Right now, we are working as Home Communication Managers (HCMs) to two orphanages in the Sendai area. Our role is to act as contacts for the orphanages, and relay any needs they may have.

What we need right now: A boy, in his 3rd year of high school (his final year), at one of the orphanages we are in contact with, has become the first orphan there to ever express interest in going to college. He wants to attend Yamaguchi Hukushi Bunka Daigaku (University of Human Welfare and Culture). It is a four year program and the university will cover tuition for the first 2 years of the program, along with 50% of the 3rd and 4th years. Our goal is to raise¥1,154,000 which includes ¥970,000 in tuition costs for the 3rd and 4th years, along with an ¥184,000 mandatory insurance cost over 4 years.

We are currently accepting PLEDGES to donate to this fund because he still needs to pass his college entrance exam. Once he does, we will move forward in collecting funds and transferring the money into an account that will be handled by the orphanage.

We welcome any grants, scholarships, or personal donations to get this young man to college, and most importantly doing it without leaving him in debt after he finishes school, since in most cases, once an orphan has finished high school, he is on his own.

It is truly inspiring that he plans to go to college and is the first from his orphanage to show interest in doing so. Successfully sending him to college would be such an amazing gift, and would inspire other orphans to follow in his footsteps, knowing that they too can receive a college education, and strive to become whatever they want to be in the future.

If you have any questions regarding this proposal or can help us out, please contact me.

Much Love,

Paul Yoo
